If your skincare routine goes beyond soap and water, you’re probably well on your way to extending the youthfulness and health of your skin. While products like sunscreen and moisturizer are important to use daily, you should be fine-tuning your application of these and other at-home skincare therapies as each season comes along.

Expert Advice from Deschutes Dermatology

With all the information out there about personal skincare, it’s crucial to listen to the proven knowledge of our highly trained and experienced professionals at Deschutes Dermatology in Bend, Oregon. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Leslie Carter and her expert team provide cosmetic, medical, and surgical dermatological services to help patients look and feel their best.

To avoid damage and maintain healthy skin, we often recommend following a thorough skincare routine at home and adjusting it as the year progresses.

Summer

Summer and sunscreen go hand-in-hand, but people don’t always grasp how serious protecting your skin from the intense summer sun really is; it shouldn’t be only reserved for beach and park days. Whenever you go out, be sure to wear at least an ounce of sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, and reapply at least two or three times a day.

This goes for people of all skin tones and in all climates, even when it’s cloudy. Wearing protective clothing and spending more time in the shade can simplify this process.

Another important summer skin tip is that lightening up on the moisturizer is okay, but don’t ditch it entirely. While those hot and humid beach days aren’t nearly as dry as wintertime, the warm air, chlorine, and saltwater still make a small amount of moisturizer a good idea. Use lightweight, water-based gel or lotions instead of thicker creams.

Autumn

Once the air gets dryer and the temperatures dip, it’s time to switch back to the heavier moisturizing cream. Try putting it on immediately after showering to lock in moisture and body oils. Don’t put away the sunscreen, as this type of skin protection should be a year-round endeavor.

Winter

Winter skincare is primarily about preventing cold, dry air from causing cracked, chapped skin. For some, this is when irritation and eczema flare-ups are most prominent. Liberally applying moisturizer is critical. Since the sun’s UV rays will reflect off snow, keep up with the sunscreen.

You may want to add some additional products during this time of year to help the skin stay healthy and smooth. Ask us about how the following items might fit into your repertoire:

  • Lip balm with sun protection
  • Hyaluronic acid facial serum
  • Retinoids
  • Antioxidants

Spring

Spring usually means more time in the great outdoors, so keep that bottle of sunscreen handy! This can also be the perfect time for Spring skin cleaning by exfoliating that winter epidermis with peels and other similar products. To help you get ready to show off that summer glow, we offer stronger chemical peels and laser therapy.
