Turn Back the Clock with Botox

shutterstock_64608115Due to aging, stress, and other related factors, it is inevitable for the skin to lose its youthful elasticity and glow as it starts to wrinkle and sag. Once these signs of aging start to appear, there could be so little we can do to reverse them. Even skin care products would prove to be of no use.

Here at Deschutes Dermatology Center, we help patients regain their youthful appearance through Botox in Bend OR. Botox gives hope to patients struggling with the signs of aging.

Botox: a toxin?

It is true when others say Botox is derived from the botulinum toxin, a microbe that is known to cause botulism or food poisoning. The toxin has the ability to paralyze any muscle activity temporarily, which is why it is an effective treatment for facial wrinkles and other problems such as excessive sweating, repetitive neck spasm, and an overactive bladder. Botox has even been known to address chronic migraines in some patients.

Why get Botox?

Botox injections have the ability to block particular chemical signals from the nerves, specifically those that cause muscles to contract. Botox injections target the underlying muscles that cause the wrinkling of the skin. Once injected, the facial muscles relax temporarily.

Moreover, Botox can correct several signs of aging, including:

  • Crow’s feet — lines that form around the corners of the eyes
  • Frown lines found in between the eyebrows
  • Forehead lines — furrows that form when the eyebrows are raised

Have Lumps? Get Them Checked Today!

ID-100130005If you have noticed some lumps and bumps below or just at the surface of your skin, that could be a noncancerous, closed tissue pocket called a cyst. Cysts feel like large peas underneath the skin’s surface. Although they often do not cause any harm, there are certain situations that require them to be removed and properly treated. Here at our Bend surgical dermatology practice, we regularly get patients who require cyst removal. Dr. Carter uses several cyst removal methods, depending upon the size and location of the cyst.

Is it a cyst or not?

A lot of small cysts do not pose any signs or symptoms. However, most of them are felt as a bump or lump on the skin. At times, they are felt beneath the skin tissues. Other cysts cause pain when felt or moved. Those which are not associated with the skin but with the internal organs instead don’t usually produce symptoms especially if they are small. Once they become large, they could displace or compress the organs and even block the normal flow of fluids in certain tissues like the liver and the pancreas. When this happens, certain symptoms may be felt by the patient.

How are cysts treated?

Although most cysts are noncancerous and do not cause any pain, they have to be removed, especially when they rupture and cause infection or inflammation. Those that do not disappear as well as those that cause symptoms may have to be drained and removed.

A cyst removal involves the use of a scalpel to pierce a cyst and drain its contents. The inflamed ones may have to be injected with cortisone medication to allow it to shrink. When all else fails, surgical removal may be needed.
