Skin Care Bend, OR

Read what Deschutes Dermatology of Bend, OR has to say about skin care. Good skin care is the key to keeping your skin healthy and glowing and beautiful no matter what age you are. Sun protection and gentle cleansing are the very basic methods used in skin care. When used in conjunction with other safe practices, the natural aging process can be delayed, and various skin problems will be averted.

Protecting yourself from the sun

Sun exposure is one of the main factors that leads to skin aging. It can cause wrinkles, sunspots, age spots, and many other skin problems, and clearly, increases your risk for skin cancer. This is why sun protection is one of the most important skincare procedures.

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen when going outdoors and reapply it every two hours, or more often if you’re going swimming or if you’re sweating excessively.
  • Avoid going under the sun between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM because that is when the ultraviolet rays are the strongest.
  • Always wear protective clothing to cover your skin from harsh sunlight.

Stop smoking

Smoking cigarettes is a major contributor to making the skin look old and wrinkled because it narrows the blood vessels on the outermost layer of the skin that decreases blood flow and depletes the oxygen and nutrients that keep the skin healthy. Components of cigarette smoke also damages collagen and elastin, which are the two most critical parts that keep the skin strong and supple.

Treat your skin gently

Contrary to popular belief, daily cleansing and frequent shaving can damage your skin.

  • Limit your bath time and use warm water, instead of hot water, to prevent the skin’s natural oils from being washed away.
  • When shaving, protect your skin by lubricating it beforehand. Use a clean and sharp razor, and remember to shave in the direction that the hair grows and not against it to prevent damage to the hair follicles.
  • Pat yourself dry after bathing or washing to make sure that some moisture is retained on the skin.
  • Use a moisturizer if your skin feels dry. Choose one that fits your skin type and is good for daily use. Also, consider using a moisturizer that already contains sun protection.

Eat a healthy diet

Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can help you look and feel better. Some studies suggest that a vitamin C rich diet helps promote younger looking skin.

Manage stress

Stress can make your skin more prone to breakouts and other skin problems. Maintain a healthy state of mind by reducing stress and setting reasonable limits for yourself, scaling back your to-do list, and making time to do things that you enjoy doing.

Deschutes Deramtology has been my “go to” place for skin cancer check-ups for years but then a few years ago a good friend told me I just HAD to see Dr. Carter about a procedure she had done. She looked great! Long story short, Dr. Leslie Carter did a procedure on me called DOT Laser. The results were more than remarkable. Honestly, people have told me I look 20 years younger. It has done so much for my confidence and overall self-perception. Plus, they took great care of me pre, post and during procedure. Would I do this again? Absolutely!!!

I never knew growing older could be so manageable until I met Patty Trapnell!  I didn’t want to age without a fight, but I was completely clueless about how to proceed with treatments to fight my aging skin.  Patty has the secret recipe.  She knows how to keep me looking youthful, without looking fake or plastic.  She takes so much ownership in what she does, and she always is so caring with follow up.  She also creates a skin treatment plan for me that allows me to always look my best, without spending entire savings.  She’s the best!  Mollie H
