What is Kybella?

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of fullness beneath the chin (submental area) by physically destroying fat cells. Once these cells are destroyed, they cannot store or accumulate fat. Come to our office in Bend to see how Kybella can help you.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella uses deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring compound in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Kybella is injected into the area under the chin to break down the fat pocket that creates the appearance of the “double chin.” Fat eliminated during the treatment is processed through your body’s natural metabolism.

Who is a candidate for Kybella?

There are several factors contributing to submental fullness (“double chin”) including genetics, weight gain, and the aging process itself. Kybella may be right for you if you’re bothered by fullness under your chin and you don’t want surgery.

What does the treatment entail?

Kybella is injected during an office visit. For each treatment session we disinfect the skin, measure and mark out the treatment area, and perform a series of injections to the submental area. This injection process generally takes 15 to 20 minutes. After treatment, you will be instructed to apply ice to the treatment area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, as often as needed for the remainder of the day.

How much downtime is there after treatment?

You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after treatment though you will have substantial swelling for the first few days. Keep social plans and work commitments in mind when scheduling your treatment. Swelling is generally resolved enough to return to work and workouts in 3 days. The remainder of swelling and inflammation will be completely resolved within one month. Results will develop gradually over time as the fat disappears and chin contour improves.

How many Kybella treatment sessions will I need to reach my goal?

The number of treatment sessions required will vary between patients based on the amount and distribution of fat in the submental area and personal treatment goals. Most people will require between two and three treatment sessions, but some may require as many as five or six. Treatment sessions will generally be spaced about four weeks apart. Results are permanent with additional treatments not expected once the desired contour is achieved.

What is the cost of Kybella treatment?

Cost is based on the total number of Kybella vials used to achieve your final treatment goal. Since the total number of vials and the total number of treatment sessions vary between patients, so does cost. During your consultation at our Bend office, we will examine you and give you an estimate.

Is Kybella safe?

The most common side effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, areas of firmness, numbness, and redness, all of which resolve with time. There is also a small risk of nerve damage along the jawline which could lead to trouble swallowing and/or temporary asymmetry of the smile. For this reason, only experienced cosmetic injectors, such as dermatologists and plastic surgeons, should perform these treatments.
