Dermal Fillers

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are biocompatible materials that are used by Dr. Carter in cosmetic dermatology to restore the fullness of the patient’s face, plump up the lips, enhance facial contours, or soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Injectable soft-tissue fillers are able to provide immediate results at a significantly lower cost than actual surgery. And despite the fact that the effects achieved with these treatments are only temporary, they may be repeated over time to maintain the desired result discussed in the consultation. The use of fillers may also be utilized in conjunction with other rejuvenation treatments for more stunning results. We recommend that you schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our providers for more information if you think you might benefit from this procedure in Bend.

What types of fillers are available?

Restylane

Restylane is a filler derived from naturally occurring hyaluronic acid and comes in a formulation of hyaluronic acid particles suspended in a gel matrix. It is effective in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and crow’s feet. Effects obtained with Restylane will last for six months to twelve months or longer and has been proven to be effective for moderate to severe wrinkles and facial folds. Patients with severe allergies or a history of allergic reactions are advised against using Restylane to reduce the potential for unwanted complications.

Juvederm

Juvederm is another hyaluronic acid derivative filler that comes in an injectable gel formula. Juvederm creates renewed volume under the skin, which makes it highly effective for moderate to severe wrinkles and facial folds, with its effects lasting for up to one year for many patients. Patients with known allergies to bacterial proteins are not suitable for the use of Juvederm.

Juvederm Voluma

Juvederm Voluma is the first and only FDA-approved filler to correct age-related volume loss in the midface. With a true optimal treatment, natural-looking results may sometimes last up to two years. It is highly effective for severe skin laxity and facial folds. Patients with known allergies to bacterial proteins are not suitable for the use of Juvederm Voluma.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a synthetic wrinkle filler that is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel matrix that is injected directly underneath the skin or the underlying muscles of the wrinkles to soften their appearance. The effects achieved with Radiesse can typically last for twelve to eighteen months or longer. Research has shown that Radiesse can improve natural collagen production over time.

Sculptra

Sculptra is a synthetic poly-L-lactic acid derivative that is used mainly for its volumizing effect in those who are in need of volume restoration. This filler is intended for deep injections, preferably below the muscles and is not indicated for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. Facial volume is restored over time with a series of injection sessions that directly stimulate the skin to make new collagen.

What to expect after your dermal filler treatment

There is no lengthy recovery period following dermal filler injections. This non-surgical option for facial rejuvenation may produce some redness and swelling around the areas where the injections were made, but most patients are able to resume most of their normal activities the same day as their treatment. The length of your results will vary based on the type of dermal filler used.
